Why We’re Rolling Out The SHIELD Family Of Devices

By Andrew Burnes on Fri, Jul 25 2014 SHIELD

Quicker than most anyone had thought possible, Android is becoming the largest computing platform in history.

There are more than a billion active Android users. And it’s being built into all types of devices. Smartphones, tablets, TVs and cars are just a start.

It’s clear that folks love to play games on Android. The Google Play Android market generated roughly $250 million in revenue in the first quarter, up 2.5 times from a year earlier. And 90% of those revenues came from games.

So far, Android gaming has largely been confined to casual games. But that’s going to change. We see a different future for Android gaming. We’re committed to turning Android into a vibrant platform that can excite gamers and provide the foundation for a vibrant industry.

That’s why we’re introducing the SHIELD tablet and SHIELD controller to a family of SHIELD devices that includes our fantastic SHIELD portable, which we continue to sell, support, and update.

Each of these devices is built to offer an incredible Android and PC gaming experience, and each product is purpose built to give individual gamers exactly what they need.

We’ve seen this movie once before. When we first showed up, gaming wasn’t part of the PC industry’s sensibility. Two decades later, PCs are the premier gaming platform.

And we’ve been there every step of the way. Not just by introducing the GPU and the programmable shader. But with support for new standards shared by the entire industry, and with steadfast support for great developers.

Like the PC, Android is an open platform. Like the PC, Android has a huge installed base of users. But the underlying performance, software tools and resulting content have yet to be delivered.

Our aim is to turbocharge Android gaming. After all, the pieces are all there. It’s an open platform. It has a vast user base. Now it’s time to add the performance – and the tools – to inspire developers to create never-before-seen experiences.

We’re taking this one step at a time. Not so long ago, Android gaming was limited to touchscreen controls on your smartphone or tablet. You could buy a third-party controller. But it was with the hope that everything would somehow work together smoothly.

The SHIELD portable, the first product in our SHIELD family of Android gaming devices, changed that. And we keep investing in it, with regular over-the-air updates that bring new features. We built TegraZone to put great games in front of gamers. And we built a device with console-grade controls that gamers could pick up and play.

We own all these pieces. So we can follow through on that investment with new tools for developers, and new features for gamers.

Gamers can play Android games, with exclusive features like Gamepad Mapper turning their favorite Android games into titles they can blast through with SHIELD’s controller. They can stream games from their PCs. And they can play these games on their high-definition TVs. We’ve even been running trials that let SHIELD users stream AAA games from the cloud.

Our partners see this opportunity, too. That’s why Google is adding more sophisticated graphics to the next version of Android with AEP. It’s why developers like Unreal are showing off next generation gaming capabilities on Android with demos like Rivals.

Now it’s time to put those technologies into a form factor at the center of the Android market: a tablet. When the SHIELD tablet is paired with our best-in-class SHIELD wireless controller, it fast-forwards the conversation about what Android can do.

Android has proven that it can go mainstream. Now it’s time to prove it can meet the needs of those who demand more.

Get ready to put on a show.

We’ve built Twitch – the world’s leading video community for gamers – right into the new SHIELD tablet. Mobile Android users can now broadcast live gameplay to friends and fans worldwide.

Gamers have made Twitch one of the world’s fastest growing social media platforms, with more than a million broadcasters and 50 million unique viewers every month. Its average user watches more than 106 minutes of video each day.

shadowplay

Capturing gameplay so that it can be shared on services like Twitch is why we built ShadowPlay into the SHIELD tablet. ShadowPlay technology comes from our GeForce Experience PC technology. It lets you record your greatest gaming moments and share them with friends – or with the world – however you please.

Thanks to ShadowPlay, virtually any Android game running on the SHIELD tablet can be broadcast to Twitch with built-in support for the SHIELD tablet’s front-facing 5MP camera, microphone and chat overlays. Now you can broadcast and record your games with the touch of a button. No need for external capture hardware.

All this makes the SHIELD tablet with ShadowPlay a must-have for Twitch users – and for anyone who likes to share their love of gaming.

Android games. PC games. Games streamed from distant servers. Games streamed from your nearby PC. Games streamed to your TV. We built the SHIELD tablet for gaming. So do we have games? Does Brazil have soccer fans?

But while the SHIELD tablet can play more games in more ways than anything like it, some mobile games are built to be at their best on this device. In addition to the thousands of Android games the SHIELD tablet can play on Google Play, there are now more than 400 SHIELD-optimized games available through the SHIELD Hub, as well as 11 specially optimized games for Tegra K1 – the world’s most advanced mobile processor – with many more coming.

Here’s a look at five of them:

650Trine_2_Complete_Story_01

Trine 2: Complete Story is a beautiful, award-winning side-scrolling game of action, puzzles and platforming. Play as the three heroes – Amadeus the Wizard, Zoya the Thief, and Pontius the Knight – and join their adventure through dangers untold in an enchanting fairytale world, including physics-based puzzles using fire, water, gravity and magic; wicked goblins; and a magical environment full of wonders. It also comes pre-installed on SHIELD tablet.

650War_Thunder_01

War Thunder is a cross-platform, massively-multiplayer, online combat game dedicated to World War II military aviation and armored vehicles. Pilots and tankers take part in all of the major combat battles, fighting with real players all over the world. Cross-platform play is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Mac OS, Linux and OnLive Cloud Lift. Look for War Thunder on Google Play this fall.

650The_Talos_Principle_01

Talos Principle is a philosophical first-person puzzle game from Croteam, creators of the Serious Sam series. Players solve a series of increasingly difficult puzzles woven into a metaphysical parable about intelligence and meaning in a doomed world. Talos Principle will be available later this fall.

650Portal_01

Portal, winner of more than 70 industry awards, is available exclusively on both the SHIELD tablet and SHIELD portable. Portal is a hybrid of first-person shooter and puzzle-style game that creates a new genre of spatial brain teasers, offering hours of unique gameplay. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories and noted for its humorous writing, the game requires players to solve puzzles and challenges by opening portals, manoeuvring objects and moving themselves through space in mind-bending ways.

650Half-Life_2_01

Half-Life 2 is one of the most celebrated and best-selling gamers of all time, with over 50 Game of the Year Awards and the highest MetaCritic score of any PC game. Winner of multiple Game of the Decade Awards, Half-Life 2 offers a startling level of realism and responsiveness, opening the door to a world where the player’s presence affects everything around him, from the physical environments to the behaviors – even the emotions – of both friends and enemies.

These are just a start. Android games such as Pure Chess, Rochard, Anomaly 2, Flyhunter: Origins, Dungeon Defenders Eternity and Chuck’s Challenge 3D: Reloaded have all been optimized for Tegra K1 and will be available on July 29.

So, however you play, and whatever you play, you’ll find games that perform their best only on the SHIELD tablet.
